Farewell For Now

"All that I'm after is a life full of laughter, as long as I'm laughing with you."
(video via YouTube)

Whenever I call my family, most of the time we end our conversations with, "Well, I've run out of things to talk about."

Unfortunately, I have to say it to ya'll today. I've run out of things to talk about, wedding-wise. So it's time to pass the baton to the bees who are still planning and recapping, and say goodbye for now.

I loved telling you about my wedding planning. Your advice and comments kept me going when I just couldn't plan anymore, and helped me keep my sanity when I came up with some crazy ideas. I'm so grateful that I had the opportunity to share with you and be a part of this wonderful community. If you'd like to take a look back at my journey, I've set up my wiki page for easy referencing.

I'll still pop in from time to time, and I'll be buzzing around the Hive. You haven't seen the last of me yet! In the meantime, I'd love for you to come hang out with me over at Everyday Adventures.

Congratulations to all of you. I hope you have beautiful weddings, and more importantly, wonderful marriages.

Love,
Allie

Miss No More

I'm finished with my recaps, but I'm not quite ready to sign off yet. I still have things to say!

After our wedding, I began the long, arduous journey of changing my name. Only it wasn't really that long or arduous. I went to MissNowMrs.com, paid the $29 to use the service and filled out all the paperwork easy squeezy. Instead of having you fill out every single form individually, MissNowMrs provides one big form where you put in your maiden name/married name/address/other pertinent information, and then autofills all the other forms for you. GENIUS! Sure there are a few things to double-check on each form, and you still have to send out each form and the required IDs and licenses and moneys with 'em, but it was seriously not that difficult. Definitely recommend this, especially if you're lazy like me.

Which leads me to the next part. I've talked here (and again, here) about my feelings on changing my name. I completely dropped my maiden name and took his, leaving my middle name intact. I do not regret my decision in the slightest. However, the day that I went to the DMV to get my driver's license changed, I was convinced this whole name thing was a huge mistake. I came home with my temporary paper license and mourned the loss of my identity. I was not excited about the change, and was so bummed out about the fact that I wasn't jumping for joy. I had wanted this ... so why wasn't I happy?

That feeling took a couple of days to go away. I think I just needed that time to say goodbye to the last name I'd had and loved for more than two decades. I needed a few days to accept the new name as mine and not just his.

I've gotten used to signing my new signature, even though I sometimes accidentally revert back to my old one. I respond when people call me Mrs. HisName. Mr. Hyena still calls me by my maiden name occasionally (ie. "Are you ready for me to destroy you at Mario Kart, Lastname?"), and I like that he does that. But overall, after going through the process and having different governing entities and banks and offices all with different names, I'm just glad to have one unifying name again.

Changing my name was the best decision for me.

Does your SO call you by your last name (or maiden name) sometimes? Can you beat your SO at Mario Kart? Would you please beat Mr. Hyena at Mario Kart? :)

After the Laughter: P-P-P-Party Every Day

You thought we were done partying just because the wedding was over? Not on your life!

The day after the wedding, we drove to Austin for our Sunday barbecue, generously hosted by Mr. Hyena's aunt and uncle.

It was really nice, because it gave us a chance to actually spend time with our families. We didn't get to spend more than a few minutes talking to people at our reception, so we were thankful for this extra time. Some of Mr. Hyena's relatives had flown in all the way from Germany for our wedding!

German family with SIL and BIL Hyena

Mr. H's family had Salt Lick Barbecue brought in, and family members provided so many delicious desserts! Not to mention we still had leftover wedding cake AND this adorable "congratulations" cake!

My family got the chance to get to know Mr. Hyena's family better and spent some time hanging out.

We also got to spend more time with our bridal party. They all had to go home that afternoon, and we didn't want to see them go!

After the party started winding down, Mr. Hyena and I headed back to College Station. We were exhausted from the weekend and were excited to get back to our home!

Are you having a get-together after the wedding?

Budget (or, Do We Really Want to Know?)

I know budgeting can be a touchy subject, but I always found posts crunching the numbers to be useful. It can be difficult to figure out what percentage of your budget should be put toward each thing, and to that, I say choose your priorities. Then, put the major money toward those priorities. Nothing wrong with pretty things, but if you've never cared about flowers before, chances are you're not going to feel good dropping eleventy hundred dollars on them now.

We were very thankful that the bulk of our wedding costs were covered by our parents. There were a few expenses here and there that we ate, but our families were very generous and for that we are extremely grateful.

A Life Full of Laughter: A Super Fly Sendoff

It was almost the end of the reception. My feet were KILLING me.

I never planned to be a two-shoe gal. If I'm rocking heels, I'll always wear them — or go barefoot — until the bitter, blistered end. Luckily our DOC had planned ahead, and she let me borrow some flip flops for the last 30 minutes of the party!

We had our last few dances, and I got to sixth-grade sway with Bridesmaid L before Mr. Hyena stole me away from her.

Our DOC made sure everyone got a paper airplane.

Mr. Hyena and I got up on the stage while everyone lined up.

Then everyone threw the airplanes at us! I used my bouquet as a shield, but Mr. Hyena got beaned in the face a couple of times. :)

Mr. Hyena made sure I didn't get my dress caught in the door of his little red truck, then we headed off to our hotel, Diet Coke cans rattling behind us.

A Life Full of Laughter: Pretty Little Details

Before I get to the very end of the night, I wanted to post just a few of our little details. You can see a lot of our details in previous posts, but here are some that I didn't include already.

My dress on my DIY hanger.

My pink pretties.

Our guestbook and photos commemorating Mr. Hyena's Grandma, Grandpa, Oma and Opa.

We had two photos for each couple: one on their respective wedding days and one as Mr. Hyena remembers them.

Our ceremony programs and seating sign.

The heart banner I made for the cake table. I never gave ya'll a tutorial on this, but it's pretty simple. Hole-punch. Thread ribbon. Hot-glue dot. Repeat.

guest photo

My engagement ring and our wedding rings, along with the beautiful pink tablecloths and the flower petals we scattered on them.

A Life Full of Laughter: Love and War

Like Mrs. Cardigan, one of the things we decided to include in our wedding is the Texas A&M Aggie War Hymn. I couldn't find a great video of it, but you can get a good idea from this clip, in case you're not familiar with it:

When the War Hymn comes on, all the Aggies sing at the top of their lungs and sway back and forth, "sawing off" the horns of the Texas Longhorns.

This is a big deal at Aggie weddings. Mr. Hyena originally wasn't sure he wanted to include it, and I looked at him like, "Dude. You're going to want the Aggie War Hymn." Sure enough, a few weeks before the wedding he started to get excited about it, and I was glad I had planned for it ahead of time!

A lot of Aggies stayed through to the end of the reception to participate!

I'm not an Aggie, but I figured I could join in since I just married one. :) I don't know the words, so I just swayed when everyone else did.

Not to be outdone, when the War Hymn was over my OU friends shouted, "BOOMER!" and I responded "SOONER!"

Are you including any traditions from your alma mater?

A Life Full of Laughter: Throw Down

A little while after we'd cut the cake, we decided to do our bouquet and garter tosses! I grabbed my toss bouquet and prepared to launch it into the crowd of ladies.

Bridesmaid L was the lucky recipient!

Then the menfolk came out to the floor.

guest photo

I took a seat on the stage, and Mr. Hyena slipped off my garter and put it on the manly football.

The guys tried to give him grief about looking while throwing the football, but Mr. Hyena didn't want to hit any of the chandeliers, so he threw it normally.

Just as predicted, the guys jumped to catch it!

My friend H caught it! And then because H and Bridesmaid L are good friends, I made him put the garter on her leg. :) It's awesome being a bride, because you can make things up spur the moment and people will do what you say!

A Life Full of Laughter: Can't Keep Us From Our Cake

You know how much I love cake. It shouldn't be a surprise that our cakes were one of my favorite details.

It was beautiful. I absolutely loved it. Three tiers of vanilla buttercream pink creamy goodness ... sorry, started salivating there for a second.

The groom's cake was just as wonderful. Two tiers of chocolate cake, with chocolate buttercream, chocolate ganache and chocolate-covered strawberries. Check out the bride and groom strawberries on top!

Wait, what is Mr. Hyena doing with a sword?

guest photo

About two weeks before the wedding, MIL Hyena gave us a call asking if we'd like to cut our cake with the family saber. We didn't know that we had a family saber, but we agreed it would be pretty cool. As the wedding approached, we learned the history behind it: Mr. Hyena's great-aunt's grandfather had fought in the Spanish-American War in 1898, and this was his sword. After his death in 1917, it was passed down through the family and has been used to cut wedding cakes since the 1940s. MIL and FIL Hyena used it to cut their wedding cake, and when SIL and BIL Hyena got married at the beginning of July, they used it as well!

It's hard to finagle a saber!

We fed each other nicely. That cake was going in our mouths, not on our faces!

It was delicious! We moved on to the groom's cake.

I promise Mr. Hyena wasn't stabbing the cake! I was, however, licking frosting off my fingers. I'm dainty like that. :)

guest photo

Mr. Hyena took his last moments of playing with a sword on our wedding day to stab a strawberry.

And of course I tried to eat it. :)

guest photo

Then Mr. Hyena's aunts converged on the table to cut slices for everyone else! (With an actual cake knife. This saber thing is difficult!)

Are you incorporating any family traditions in your wedding?
